The engine is the centrepiece of your Volkswagen. Discover here why it runs especially quietly and reliably with Volkswagen Genuine Timing Belts, Spark Plugs and Coolant Additive.
A timing belt made of a solid material, which reliably transfers power for longer – in extreme heat and cold –, but which is flexible enough to adapt and to keep tension constant. That is what your engine would wish for from a timing belt. That is why we have designed Volkswagen Genuine Timing Belts exactly like this – matched to your Volkswagen.
A timing belt transfers power from the crankshaft to the camshaft. This causes the engine’s valves to open and close. The fuel/air mixture enters the combustion chamber, combusts and drives the pistons. The timing belt also often controls the water pump.
An old or heavily worn timing belt may tear and cause engine damage. Reason: The engine’s valve control loses its rhythm, the piston hits the valve like a bullet – often at 15 m/s. The entire cylinder head usually needs to be replaced.
A timing belt lasts up to 100,000 km, depending on model, engine and driving style. Nevertheless, have it checked every now and then at your Volkswagen Service Centre within your Service Intervals.
An incorrectly fitted timing belt will damage the engine. Replacing it is also complicated and time-consuming. The toothed wheels and guide wheels must be perfectly aligned and the timing belt properly tensioned. The water pump, tensioner and idler pulleys should also be changed at the same time. In addition to a great deal of specialist knowledge, you will need special tools. So, preferably let your Volkswagen Service Centre carry out the change.
Whenever you depress your accelerator pedal – your Volkswagen engine can react precisely and develop its full power with Volkswagen Genuine Spark Plugs. Reason: They have been especially developed for your engine and matched exactly to its requirements. They spark reliably, ensure optimum combustion and do not overheat. For a quiet engine operation and less consumption – it is recommended to replace the spark plug in between 40,000km to 60,000km.
Depending on type and quality, spark plugs last between 40,000 to 60,000 km. Adhere to your inspection intervals. Then you will know at an early stage when your spark plugs are no longer fit. That will prevent consequential costs.
You can extend the life of your spark plugs by having the correct oil level and through your driving style: If the oil level is too high, they may oil up; if you drive many short distances, they may become sooty. Reason: The engine does not reach the temperature that they need in order to clean themselves.
Spark plugs are exposed to high pressure, shocks and temperatures of up to 3,000 °C. At the same time, even a few ignition failures damage the catalytic converter.
Even if changing the spark plugs seems quite straightforward, the smallest error may cause major engine damage. Why is that? Every engine requires a different spark plug: The wrong one damages the engine in the same way as the wrong tool or the wrong tightening torque. Don't take the risk; it is best to go to your Volkswagen Service Centre.
Don't drive on!
Call on expert assistance.
Is illuminated: Coolant level too low, Temperature too high or system faulty.
Flashes: Coolant system faulty.
Temperature indicator in the warning range?
Stop, switch off the engine and let it cool down. Only then, continue driving. Check coolant level.
Temperature indicator in the normal range?
Check the coolant level when the engine has cooled down and top coolant up, if necessary. Is the level OK? Caution: fault! Don't continue driving; contact your Service Advisor.
